The Jeff Shikles 8K Run/Walk is a family fitness event that was established to raise funds to benefit children of Boone County in memory of Boonslick past President Jeff Shikles. Jeff Shikles was a beloved small animal Veterinarian in the community. Besides having a deep commitment to Kiwanis he readily volunteered his time with other youth groups in the community.
The Jeff Shikles 8K Run/Walk is an annual event and the proceeds earned from this event are given to an organization in the community that directly benefits children. Each year, the Run/Walk committee selects an area organization to receive these funds. Organizations that have benefited from the race/walk include the Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center, Safe Kids Coalition, Head Start of Columbia, Rainbow House (caring for neglected/abused children), Parents as Teachers (Columbia Public Schools), Columbia Soccer Club and Camp Kesem.
The 1st “Annual” Jeff Shikles Memorial 8K was held on Sunday, May 21st and 131 paid entrants with the proceeds going to the Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center. An organization that Jeff donated considerable time and energy. Both of Jeff’s children, John, age 11 and Katie, age 8, ran in the race to honor their father.
This year’s event is being held on Saturday, May 20th. What has made this event so successful has been the volunteer support of the club members and our “partnership” with area veterinarians sponsoring the Run/Walk.
For 2017, the following veterinarians have donated funds in support of the Run/Walk:
Noah’s Ark Animal Hospital, Rock Bridge Animal Hospital, Rolling Hills Veterinary Hospital, Peach Tree Animal Hospital, Equine Medical Services, Pet Center, Horton Animal Hospital – Central and Horton Animal Hospital – Forum.
Proceeds from last year’s Run/Walk enabled the club to donate $1,300 to Camp Kesem, All proceeds from this year’s event will also go to the local chapter of Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem Mzzou.
